About University City
The neighborhood of University City in San Diego, California, is home to some of the top high-tech, clean-tech, and biotech companies, but University City is not completely about tech! Recreational opportunities abound. Following are some fun University City outings:
1. Go to the mall.
At the outdoor Westfield University Towne Centre, you’ll find department stores, chain stores, and lots of new-to-the-area stores. The mall’s lovely landscaped gardens and fountains create a relaxing and welcoming ambiance. The food court offers both indoors and outdoors seating. Outdoors offers shade and even live music from local bands on Wednesdays at lunchtime—what a great place for hard-working University City tutors and their students to meet up. The indoor dining area is special, too, because the dining area circles an ice rink, which means there’s plenty to watch. Guests can even try their hand at a free introductory ice skating class for beginners. The mall also has a fourteen-screen movie theater.
2. Tour (or walk) UCSD.
At the western edge of University City lies the sprawling University of California at San Diego, where brilliant students study, and even more brilliant professors and researchers lead them. The university is consistently ranked near the top of public universities and is an asset to the community (imagine the quality of tutoring in University City when UCSD students are doing the tutoring!). Even if you don’t have a teenager exploring potential colleges, you can take a walking tour of this scenic campus to learn what goes on here: there are plenty of lectures, performances, classes, and sporting events available to the public.
3. Take a hike.
Rose Canyon Open Space Park has trails that meander through various habitats: everything from the normal coastal sage scrub and chaparral to an oak woodland and a rare riparian habitat running the length of the park, the year-round creek eventually emptying into Mission Bay. One can imagine, through the dense foliage, the presence of Kumeyaay Indians, who inhabited the canyon hundreds of years ago, gathering acorns from the oaks, weaving baskets from arroyo willows, and hunting game.
4. Play golf.
Golfers love picturesque Torrey Pines Golf Course, which sits atop coastal cliffs overlooking the ocean. The city-owned facility boasts two eighteen-hole golf courses and is open to the public for a round of golf, lessons, or watching some of the world’s top championships.
5. Go to the beach.
The closest beach to University City is probably the best San Diego beach for families. In addition to the expansive sandy shore, La Jolla Shores has a large grassy area with picnic tables, a playground, and restrooms. If you are looking for more adventure, down the coast is La Jolla Cove, which caters more toward ocean swimmers and kayakers, the latter which enjoy exploring adjacent sea caves. Snorkelers never seem to tire of watching the harmless leopard sharks that hug the sandy ocean floor in the summer. Garibaldi (small, bright yellow fish) are also plentiful.
