About Suitland-Silver Hill

A little more than a mile southeast of the National Mall, Suitland-Silver Hill, Maryland is a suburb of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. After making his fortune in the Kentucky whiskey industry, Samuel Taylor Suit, who had been born in Maryland, moved back to the state after the Civil War and bought 300 acres of land where he built a farm named, appropriately, Suitland. The site of the farm is today at the intersection of Silver Hill and Suitland roads in the city’s downtown. Suit became a Maryland state senator in the 1870’s and built a magnificent mansion where he often entertained dignitaries from Washington such as presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes. Unfortunately, the mansion at Suitland burned down in 1876. The Colonel’s son Arthur later owned a general store, bar and bowling alley. He was also a constable and deputy sheriff. Throughout the second half of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century the town grew slowly and was mainly a residential area for workers in the capital. In 1944 the Suitland Parkway opened, connecting Washington with Andrews Air Force Base, now Joint Base Andrews. In 2001, the Washington Metro opened a station in Suitland making travel to the capital even easier.

A Suitland-Silver Hill tutor will keep you caught up on your academics so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy the exciting things to do in the D.C. area. For those interested in the history of the United States a visit to the National Archives Building a few miles north of Suitland is mandatory. The archives and the National Records Center in Suitland are home to a multitude of historically significant documents. The archives feature original copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Visitors may also view an original copy of the English Magna Carta, signed in 1297. For more American history, it’s only a short drive from Suitland to the Library of Congress, the largest library in the world. It holds over 160 million items including books, recordings, photographs, manuscripts, newspapers and maps. The library was founded in 1800 but was burned by the British during the War of 1812. To replenish the library’s collection Congress purchased the personal library of Thomas Jefferson which contained over 6,000 volumes.

Nature lovers and armchair botanists will want to visit the nearby U.S. National Arboretum. Established in 1927, the National Arboretum sits on over 400 acres and features a variety of plants from all over the world. Popular attractions include the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum which highlights the art of raising and tending the traditional Japanese potted landscape. The National Grove of State Trees offers 30 acres of trees from all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia.

Residents of Suitland-Silver Hill and visitors alike will enjoy a short trip west on Interstate 495 to National Harbor, a 350-acre resort complete with shopping, hotels, restaurants and a marina. The Harbor is home to the Capital Wheel, a 180-foot observation wheel which features scenic views of the Potomac and the monuments on the National Mall. The MGM National Harbor is a luxury resort with gaming, high end dining and a 3,000-seat amphitheater. The National Harbor’s website boasts that there’s nowhere else on the “Eastern Seaboard you’ll find a mix of things to do, see and experience.”
