About San Marcos

In the northern part of San Diego County, you’ll find the city of San Marcos. A typical, and beautiful, Southern California town, San Marcos is home to a beautiful lake and a stunning backdrop of hills and mountains. The population experienced a noticeable increase in from the 1990s until 2010, and has continued to grow since then. San Marcos is considered to be one of the top five fastest growing cities in the state of California.

As is true with most of this region in Southern California, this land was first occupied by Native Americans before the Spanish explorers and missionaries staked their claim to the area. The fertile land of San Marcos was occupied by Spanish rancheros, and was primarily occupied by Spanish landowners until the early 1800s when German and Dutch settlers began arriving to the area. When the Santa Fe Railroad arrived to the area, more immigrants began to flow in to San Marcos and set up homesteads.

San Marcos is famous for having some of the very best places to eat within San Diego County. A particular street called “Old California Restaurant Row” is home to a number of excellent restaurants. Tourists come to the area from far and wide to sample some of San Marcos’ local flavor, as these restaurants provide access to many different cuisines.

Families that live in San Marcos love that there are so many parks and recreational facilities in the city. With many miles of nature trails, open spaces, and public parks, there is easy access to fun, family-friendly places to go. A local favorite, Double Peak Park provides one of the best views of the area, and is known for having the highest peak along this coastal region. Make sure to bring your camera with you!

The city of San Marcos is served by the San Marcos School District, which boasts over twenty schools from elementary through high school. Several private schools and charter schools also serve the city, and Palomar Collage is also located here. A popular local high school, High Tech High, provides high school students with a curriculum geared towards the technology industry through extracurricular projects, internships, and professional industry connections and mentorships. Students who require extra one-on-one help can consult with local San Marcos tutors. These tutors are available to help in a wide variety of subjects and school levels, and can help each student reach their own personal educational goals.
