About Sabre Springs
Nestled among the rolling hills along Interstate 15 just south of Rancho Peñasquitos and Rancho Bernardo, Sabre Springs is an affluent neighborhood in northeastern San Diego. Originally part of Mexican land grants, the area which is now Sabre Springs was used as rangeland for large herds of cattle and sheep into the early 20th century. For a time, the land was owned by the family of long distance swimmer Florence May Chadwick. A native of San Diego, Chadwick attended Point Loma High School and San Diego State College. Unable to compete in short distance Olympic swimming, Chadwick turned to ocean and rough water swimming. At the age of ten she became the youngest swimmer ever to cross the mouth of San Diego Bay. She captured the 2.5-mile race off the coast of La Jolla ten times in eighteen years. In 1931 she shattered the women’s record for fastest swim across the English Channel shaving more than an hour off the time set by American Olympic champion Gertrude Ederle who had been the first woman to swim the channel. Chadwick went on to cross the channel three more times. She became the first woman to swim the 21-miles from mainland California to Catalina Island. As if that were not enough she also crossed the Straits of Gibraltar, the Bristol Channel between England and Wales as well as the Bosporus and Dardanelles in Turkey. Chadwick gained induction into the Swimming Hall of Fame in 1970 and died of leukemia in San Diego at the age of seventy-six. Her ashes were spread in the Pacific Ocean off Point Loma.
In the second half of the 1900’s, Sabre Petroleum Corporation owned the land, hence the name Sabre Springs. Development didn’t come until the 1980’s when residential, industrial and open space areas were plotted. Today, Sabre Springs is considered one of the best neighborhoods in San Diego by the real estate web site Niche. A Sabre Springs tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from the books to enjoy Sabre Springs and the greater San Diego area. For outdoor enthusiasts, Sabre Springs offers a wealth of open spaces. Both Sabre Springs Park and South Creek Park feature the usual amenities including playgrounds, athletic fields and picnic areas. Just to the northeast of Sabre Springs, Carmel Mountain Ranch has one of the finest golf courses in San Diego. Carved into the desert landscape, the Carmel Mountain course winds its way through an upscale residential neighborhood with 18 challenging holes along rolling terrain with expertly manicured fairways, imposing pot bunkers and challenging greens.
For more outdoor recreation opportunities, Sabre Springs is right next door to Black Mountain Open Space Park. The 2,352-acre park centers around 1,500-foot Black Mountain. For hikers, the park offers a variety of easy to difficult trails winding through rolling hills, native grasslands, chaparral and coastal sage. The Miner’s Ridge Loop Trail is a moderate 2.7-mile hike with spectacular views of the countryside and potential sightings of colorful wildflowers and native wildlife. For a longer hike the trail connects with the James Irvine Trail to form a 12-mile loop.
Sabre Springs also benefits from being close to the Pacific coast. It’s only a few miles west to the La Jolla Shore and a tour of the La Jolla Sea Caves. The tour blends the excitement of kayaking with views of the spectacular environment. The 1.5-hour tour features different marine settings including sandy beaches, rocky caves, steep cliffs and deep water canyons. Alert kayakers may also catch sight of wildlife such as sea lions, pelicans, giant rays and colorful garibaldi who seek shelter in the rocky shallows just below the ocean surface.
