About Rancho Bernardo
Along Interstate 15 a few miles east of the coast, Rancho Bernardo is a master planned residential community north of downtown San Diego. Originally part of the Mexican land grant Rancho San Bernardo, the area which is now Rancho Bernardo was acquired by English mariner Joseph Snook in 1842. Snook had come to California in 1830 as the captain of a merchant vessel sailing up and down the California coast trading fur, hides, horns and tallow. Snook settled in San Diego, married María Antonia Alvarado, relative of the California governor, and became a Mexican citizen, taking the name Don José Francisco Snook. Like other proprietors of the huge California ranchos, Snook raised cattle on the land. In fact, observers estimated that Rancho San Bernardo was one of the largest cattle raising establishments in California at a time when beef was cheaper than salt. Snook died in 1848 at the same time the United States was defeating Mexico for control of California and gold was discovered near Sacramento. Snook left his land to wife and children but within 30 years most of San Diego County had been opened to American settlers. In the 1960’s Rancho Bernardo was annexed by the city of San Diego and developed as a planned community. Today, the area is an affluent enclave in the rolling hills complete with golf courses, shopping centers and upscale residential housing. Real estate website Niche ranks Rancho Bernardo as one of the best San Diego neighborhoods to live in.
It’s certain that a Rancho Bernardo tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy the exciting attractions and activities in the San Diego area. For the competitive, Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course has 18 holes of championship golf as well as an award-winning hotel. The course layout features water hazards, bunkers and tree lined fairways. The inn offers 287 deluxe rooms and suites with restaurants including the Avant, Veranda Fireside Lounge and the Golf Grill. Specialty weddings and receptions are also available at the inn and golf course with a choice of five different settings.
Rancho Bernardo is a short drive from the world-famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park in the San Pasqual Valley. The park has free range enclosures with animals from all over the world including giraffes, zebra, tigers and cheetahs. Habitats such as the Asian Savanna, African Plains and Tiger Trail cover over 300 acres. One of the newest activities, the Balloon Safari, takes visitors 400-feet into the air in hot air balloons to look down on the various park exhibits. The park originally opened as the Wild Animal Park in 1964 by the San Diego Zoological Society. The park works in conjunction with the San Diego Zoo in the downtown area.
On the northwest edge of Rancho Bernardo, Lake Hodges Reservoir offers several options for recreational activities. Bass, bluegill and catfish fill the lake for fishermen who can access the water by boat, float tube or simply by casting a line from the shore. Because Hodges is a reservoir there is no skiing or swimming. For hikers, there is a seven-mile main trail around the lake which winds through rolling hills, streams, forests and open fields.
In the rolling hills on the northwest edge of Rancho Bernardo, Lake Hodges Reservoir is not only a source for water but also a recreational destination for fishermen, campers and hikers
