About Prosper

Aptly named, Prosper, Texas is one of the top ten suburbs in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area according to the real estate website Movoto. Median Household income in Prosper is nearly $130,000 a year and the unemployment rate is under the state’s average at 4.3 percent. The city’s website claims that Prosper is “A Place Where Everyone Matters” and is focused on families and small town ideals. About 40 miles due north from Dallas, the area around Prosper was first settled by cotton farmers in the late 1840’s. For the remainder of the nineteenth century the area included two towns, Rock Hill to the south and its neighbor Richland. When the towns merged in 1902 the name Richland had already been taken so, because of a particularly excellent farm crop that year, the town came to be known as Prosper.

Upon the city’s incorporation in 1914 the 500 citizens of Prosper promptly elected Uncas Norvell Clary as its mayor. Named after the Indian chief from James Fenimore Cooper’s novel Last of the Mohicans, Clary’s family came to Texas from Tennessee in the 1880’s and settled in what was then Richland. Clary was a banker by trade, assuming the presidency of Prosper State Bank in 1929 and holding that position until his retirement in 1965. At his retirement, he was, by all accounts, one of the oldest bankers in Texas. But, even more amazing, Clary served as Prosper’s mayor longer than he was president of the bank. Clary put in an astonishing 49 years as mayor from 1914-1963. He was so popular that he was challenged only once for reelection during all those years. Not content with the demands of a bank president and city mayor, Clary was also an active Mason and member of the First Methodist Church as well as being an avid coin collector and amateur photographer. He died in 1972 at age 91.

Prosper continues to grow and is a thriving, upscale community. It boasts one of the most expensive high schools In Texas. At $113 million, Prosper High School is 590,000-square feet and includes a medical lab, greenhouse, broadcast studio and indoor football practice facility. Prosper also includes two nearby institutions of higher learning. Located 17 miles south the University of Texas at Dallas is an innovative research school specializing in science, engineering, business and mathematics. Collin Community College has campuses in nearby Plano, McKinney, Rockwall and Allen and serves more than 46,000 students annually.

Prosper also benefits from its proximity to the Dallas and Plano metropolitan areas. A Prosper tutor will have no trouble getting you ahead of the curve on your academics so you can take advantage of the amenities in your area. Things to do include nature preserves, museums, art galleries, aquariums and much more. According to, the three best things to do near Prosper include going to Hope Park and Frisco Square in Frisco and the Play Street Museum in McKinney.
