About Potomac

Originally settled in the early eighteenth century after a land grant from Lord Baltimore, Potomac, Maryland, along the banks of the river of the same name, is regarded as one of the best suburbs of Washington D.C. by real estate websites Niche and Movoto. Potomac is also considered one of the most affluent places in the United States boasting a median household income close to $200,000 a year. For over 150 years the town was known as Offutt’s Crossroads, named for Edward Offutt who received 600 acres from Lord Baltimore in 1715. After the Civil War the name was changed reflecting the town’s geographic location. In the 1930’s several wealthy professionals from Washington D.C. invaded the area looking for rolling hills, picturesque scenery and cheap land. Many of these settlers wanted land for equestrian endeavors such as English style hunts and polo. Indeed, the area is still home to Congressional, Seneca, Potomac and Red Eagle polo clubs. gives Potomac public schools an A+ and whether you attend a public or private school you will certainly benefit from the help which can be provided by a Grade Potential Tutor. A Potomac tutor can get you caught up on your studies so you can enjoy the exciting things to do in the Washington D.C. area. For hikers, the Cabin John Stream Valley Trail on the south edge of Potomac provides eight miles of trail with an experience of solitude and natural beauty despite being in the middle of an urban area. For even more outdoor fun the Billy Goat Trail is one of the most popular hikes in the D.C. area. The trail offers rock hopping along the Potomac and spectacular views of the river and surrounding landscape.

Those with less ambition might want to settle on a trip to the Westfield Montgomery mall next door to Potomac in Bethesda. The Westfield is a shopping mecca with some of the finest stores in the nation offering just about everything a consumer might need. Abercrombie and Fitch, Apple, Clarks, Macys, Sears and plenty more occupy space in this two-story complex. Every May the mall is host to “Montgomery in Bloom,” a flower show complete with wine tasting, live make-up tutorials as well as product and food demos. With a rotating collection of contemporary art, the Glenstone Museum is, according to its reviews, a hidden gem. The Glenstone offers paintings, sculptures and other art forms by American and European artists from the post-World War II period. Masterpieces from such artists as Alexander Calder, Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol have graced the walls of Glenstone.

For nature enthusiasts, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conversation Biology Institute at Rock Creek Park is just a few miles down the road from Potomac. Open every day except Christmas and always free, the zoo is one of only four places in America to see the cuddly giant panda. The zoo houses more than 300 different species including elephants, tigers, giant tortoises, sea lions and orangutans. The zoo also offers exhibitions and demonstrations including elephant training and Amazon fish feeding.
