About Pasadena

Pasadena, Texas (not be confused with Pasadena, California and the little old lady the Beach Boys sang about) is a community that celebrates its local traditions and identity every year with the annual Strawberry Festival. At one time, Pasadena boasted itself as the Strawberry Capital of the World, which is a title that came about only after a severe setback at the turn of the nineteenth century.

The famous tornado that ripped through nearby Galveston also laid waste Pasadena, wiping out crops and businesses. The recently formed Red Cross saw Pasadena’s needs and arranged to send millions of strawberries to the Gulf Coast to help farmers recover their local economies. In fact, Clara Barton personally purchased and saw to the shipping of these plants. Strawberries grow well in wet, sandy soil, and the hot, humid summers and mild winters are helpful conditions for strawberries to thrive. Pasadena established a major strawberry farm, owned by the founder of Texaco gas, Joseph Cullinan. Rice farmers soon followed suit, and Pasadena’s crops started to recover.

To commemorate this event, and the economic surge that came with recovery, Pasadena holds a yearly Strawberry Festival. At one time, Pasadena’s strawberry growers shipped as many as 28 train carloads of strawberries each day, which went all over the United States providing fresh berries to places they could not grow. To this day, Strawberry Road follows the miles of paths of old strawberry fields that grew within city limits, and up to 60,000 people attend the festival every year.

Pasadena’s industry, for several years, rested on the recovery brought by the strawberry and rice fields of the community. It has since diversified and grown into a strong city, with jobs part of many other sectors, including work with NASA, imports and exports, and the oil industry.

Tutors, like the Red Cross, can help students in an academic crisis. They have the necessary tools to show their clients how to work their way out of a setback and into the realm of success, just as the Red Cross willingly donated strawberry plants to help pull Pasadena and the surrounding cities out of an economic slump. With hard work and hope, the residents of Pasadena used those strawberries to turn their town around and come back, bigger and stronger than before. Tutors in Pasadena help inspire this same level of success and hope in their students.
