About Pacific Beach
As its name suggests, Pacific Beach is a coastal neighborhood of San Diego along the ocean just north of Mission Bay and south of La Jolla. With its sandy beaches and mild climate, the area which is now Pacific Beach became a prime destination for land developers during the California real estate boom of 1887. Led by Wisconsin born attorney and politician D.C. Reed, along with other investors, Pacific Beach was parceled into lots and auctioned to the highest bidders. Soon enough, hotels, restaurants and even a race track were built in the area. A railway connecting downtown San Diego to Pacific Beach further enhanced growth. Streets, named after the original investors, began running east and west, north and south, with Mission Boulevard furthest west along the beach and what would become Interstate 5 on the east. Reed Avenue, Oliver Avenue and Thomas Avenue are just a few of the streets named after early Pacific Beach developers. Other streets were named for precious stones such as Turquoise and Sapphire. In the early 1900’s Pacific Beach lots sold for as little as $350 for ocean front property. For the next several years the area saw significant expansion so that by 1950 there were 30,000 residents. Today, of course, Pacific Beach houses can sell for millions.
A Pacific Beach tutor can take you from dunce to genius to get you caught up on your most difficult academic subjects so you can ditch the books to enjoy the spectacular beaches and other amenities of Pacific Beach and the greater San Diego area. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are a wealth of activities such as the Ocean Front Walk which spans the length of North Pacific Beach, Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, also known as The Strand. Sun seekers can choose from hanging out on the grassy lawn above the beach, lounging on the sand or simply walking, biking or rollerblading along the pathway. The north end of the beach is dominated by Tourmaline Surf Park where wave catchers rule the scene. At the south end, Crystal Pier is relatively short at 872-feet but is famous for its fishing as well as the Crystal Pier Hotel and Cottages, built in the 1930’s.
Pacific Beach residents benefit from being right across Mission Bay from world famous Sea World San Diego. Built as a zoological park celebrating marine life, particularly ocean mammals, Sea World opened in 1964. For many years, the primary attractions at the park included frolicking dolphins, leaping orcas and playful sea lions. Today, the park is much more with thrill rides such as the 95-foot tall Journey to Atlantis roller coaster. One of the most popular attractions at the park is Dolphin Point where bottlenose dolphins swim in a multi-pool complex and are accessible to visitors who can interact with them. Sea World is probably most famous for Shamu, the show stopping killer whale who performed for audiences beginning in 1965. Recently, Sea World has announced it will cease its orca breeding program so the current whales are the last to be seen at the park.
Pacific Beach is notable for its bustling nightlife and trendy dining. Bars and restaurants dot the landscape along Mission Boulevard. The Firehouse American Eatery offers tempting American cuisine you can enjoy on their patio. Likewise, the Bare Back Grill has more comfort food including tasty artisan burgers and sides. For those with a sweet tooth, The Baked Bear serves up delicious cookies, donuts, brownies and features made to order ice cream sandwiches.
