About Leesburg

Located on the border of Virginia and Maryland, Leesburg is a city just over thirty miles west of Washington, D.C. Leesburg also borders the Potomac River, and has a rich history and an interesting collection of local historical treasures. Families that live in Leesburg enjoy its vibrant culture and historical significance in the United State’s early years.

What was once just a small, rural farm town only a few decades ago is now a bustling suburban city, and Leesburg continues to experience growth. With its location so close to Washington D.C., many people live here and commute to the capital to work. With access to many more jobs because of its close location to the big city, families in Leesburg also enjoy all of the amenities that Washington D.C. has to offer.

Leesburg is the site of several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Ball’s Bluff. Being centrally located between many northern and southern camps, Leesburg changed hands multiple times when it comes to northern or southern control. Because of this rich history, many buildings in Leesburg have been preserved or restored, and date back to the mid 1800s. Over twenty buildings and structures in Leesburg are named on the National Register of Historic Places, making Leesburg a great place to visit for an American Civil War history buff.

With a wide variety of public parks and recreational facilities, Leesburg has a lot to offer the families that live here. A local favorite, Ida Lee Park is a huge piece of property that was donated to the city by a local farmer and his wife. In honor of their family that lived in the area during its early years, Ida Lee Park boasts a gorgeous pavilion, a large picnicking area, and a fun playground for small children.

There’s always something fun to do in Leesburg, and local community events are planned throughout the year to keep the townspeople involved. The Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival happens in the spring, and shows off some of the most beautiful gardens that the region has to offer.

Leesburg Scholarship


Thanks for your interest in our scholarship! Every six months, we select the essay that our panel of 3 judges determines to be the best.

The Fall deadline to apply is November 15th. The Fall winner will be announced to all applicants on December 10th.

The Spring deadline to apply is May 15th. The Spring winner will be announced to all applicants on June 10th.

The current essay prompt is, “Who has inspired your education the most and why?”

Entries must be between 300-1,000 words.

No purchase necessary to enter or win. Void where prohibited by law. One entry per household per year. Winner will be notified via email on or before the Winner Selection Date. Failure by potential winner to respond to such notification within ten (10) days of notification, or failure by the potential winner to adhere to these Official Rules, will result in disqualification of the potential winner and an alternate winner will be selected.
