About Herndon

A small city near the border of Virginia and Maryland, Herndon is a beautiful place to live with a high quality of life for its residents. Considered to be within the metropolitan area of Washington D.C., Herndon’s residents have access to all of the big city amenities that Washington D.C. has to offer while still enjoying the small city life in Herndon. Many residents commute to surrounding cities each day for work, including Washington D.C.

Named after a famous American commander, Herndon was once primarily a farming area just outside of the city of Washington D.C. Many Washington D.C. residents also enjoyed traveling to Herndon to vacation, since it was such a beautiful, rural location not to far from the nation’s capital city. Herndon gained popularity when the railroad connected it to the surrounding area, making it easier to access. Once the railroad no longer ran through Herndon and the railroad area was converted to a walking path, Herndon turned a negative into a positive and became known for being a charming small town. The old, now useless train depot was converted into a museum for tourists to visit, and the caboose train car was transformed into a livery.

Locals in Herndon love this charming small town for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is that there is always something fun to do, and always a town event to look forward to. The local Farmers’ Market runs from the spring through the fall, and is a popular event for all ages. The “Herndon Festival” raises everyone’s small town spirits with a parade, festival rides, concerts, and good food. The local Jazz Festival happens on Labor Day weekend each year, and has been growing in popularity in the last several years, brining many tourists to the area for the first time.

The Fairfax County School District serves the families of Herndon, and parents feel that their children are provided with quality options when it comes to school. A number of elementary schools are available, as well as one middle school and one high school in town. A handful of private schools, including Temple Baptist and a couple of Montessori schools, are available to families in Herndon as well. Families appreciate having options, and feel that there are several good schools to choose from. For parents that feel their child could benefit from some extra one-on-one help, local Herndon tutors can provide additional assistance in a wide variety of subjects.
