About Flower Mound
Rising 650 feet above sea level and over 50 feet above the surrounding country side the mound which gave the city of Flower Mound its name was discovered by settlers in the 1840’s. Because of the abundance of wildflowers found on the spot the name easily followed. Botanists believe the mound, which is 12 miles wide, has more than 175 species of flowers. Originally used by settlers for Presbyterian religious camps the area was permanently occupied in the 1850’s, yet did not become an incorporated city for over 100 years. In 1974 the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport sparked major population growth and the city rapidly expanded, so much so that in the 1990’s it was one of the fastest growing cities in the nation.
Along with the mound, one of the most prominent features of this area is Lake Grapevine which makes up most of the southern edge of the city and separates Flower Mound from its sister city, Grapevine. The 8,000-acre lake plays host to a wealth of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, camping and hiking. Its website boasts that it is the “best lake in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.” The lake has three separate campgrounds, several boat ramps and three marinas. And if hiking is on the agenda the lake has many wonderful trails, most notably the 9.5-mile North Shore Trail. The trail, as with other trails at Lake Grapevine, is open to not only hikers but also mountain bikers and, of course, dogs.
One of the most interesting historical aspects of Flower Mound is its inclusion along the path of the famous Chisholm Trail. It’s certain that a Flower Mound tutor can fill you in on Texas history and get you ahead of the academic curve. The trail was responsible for the herding of over six million head of prime beef cattle on their way from San Antonio, Texas to Abilene, Kansas, an 800-mile trek. Named after Jesse Chisholm, a fur trader, the trail started near Lockhart, just northeast of San Antonio, and traversed through Austin, Waco, Fort Worth, Flower Mound, Denton and several cities in Oklahoma. Once the cattle reached Kansas and the railroad they were transported east, eventually winding up on the dinner tables of those in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C. as well as other major metropolitan areas in the 20-year period after the Civil War.
Since Flower Mound is only about ten miles from downtown Dallas it is within easy reach of a wealth of activities and attractions in the big city. Nature, art, science and history exhibits are all available in Dallas. For nature lovers, a visit to the Texas Discovery Gardens is mandatory. The 7.5 acre gardens are alive with a variety of native and naturally adapted plants and flowers. Art aficionados will appreciate Dallas’s museums including the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Dallas Museum of Art. History and science buffs will need to include the The Sixth-Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, the site of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science on their schedules for a visit to Dallas.
A field of bluebonnets in bloom is a typical spring sight in the justifiably named city of Flower Mound, Texas.
