About Farmers Branch
Tracing its history all the way back to the 1840’s, Farmers Branch is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, only about eleven miles from downtown Dallas and even closer to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Because of the area’s rich soil and excellent farmland, one of the community’s founders, William Cochran, gave the area its agricultural name. Looking for settlers in the wake of the war with Mexico and the establishment of statehood, the Texas Land and Immigration Company advertised heavily in Europe and elsewhere making Farmers Branch one of the most well-known places in Dallas County in the middle of the nineteenth century.
One of the most interesting settlers to make Famers Branch his home, Dr. Samuel H. Gilbert brought his young wife to the area and promptly built a house in the middle of a grove of oak trees. The house, built in what was referred to as the dogtrot style, is made up of thick limestone walls, a chestnut plank floor and has a large open hallway through the middle of the house. Amazingly, the house still stands today and is a prominent feature of the city’s Historical Park. A founding member of the Dallas Medical Association, Gilbert was not only a physician but also a farmer who raised cotton, corn and wheat. Along with Gilbert House, the Historical Park is the site of the Queen Anne Victorian Cottage, originally built in Gainesville, Texas in 1885, and the Railroad Depot, built in 1877. At the depot, visitors will find a vintage all wood caboose from the 1890’s.
While Farmers Branch can boast of an engaging history it’s also notable for its natural environment. Hikers, joggers and picnickers will enjoy the 104 acres of the John F. Burke Nature Preserve. The preserve is dominated by seasonal wetlands and upland forest made up of aspen, oak, maple, pine, spruce and birch trees. Another natural feature of Farmers Branch are the many gardens in the city, including those in Gussie Field Watterworth Park and those in the Historical Park. All in all, the city has over 1,500 rose bushes. The area around Watterworth Park also houses a bird sanctuary and butterfly garden. Weddings are often held in these beautiful natural settings.
Farmers Branch plays host to several annual events including the Bloomin’ Bluegrass Festival and Chili Cook-off in October. Independence Day in Farmers Branch is highlighted by the Stars and Strings Concert featuring the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. A Farmer’s Branch tutor will keep you ahead of the curve on your studies so you can enjoy these exciting events. But maybe the most popular local activity is the weekly Farmers Branch Market held in the open air under a canopy of Oak Trees each Saturday from April through October.
Dominated by seasonal wetlands and upland forest, the John F. Burke Nature Preserve in Farmer's Mound, Texas is a delight to hikers and those who enjoy the outdoors
