About Fallbrook

About midway between Riverside and San Diego on Interstate 15, Fallbrook, California retains a small-town atmosphere despite its proximity to two major metropolitan areas. Originally part of a Mexican land grant, Fallbrook got its name from pioneering hotelier, coal magnate and veritable renaissance man Vital Reche. Reche named Fallbrook after the area in Pennsylvania where he discovered significant coal reserves in the 1850’s. Reche settled in Fallbrook after being diagnosed with cancer and advised to move to a more moderate climate. He seemed to thrive in California planting fruit trees, farming alfalfa, raising bees for honey which would be well known throughout Southern California and opening a hotel, Reche’s Retreat, for tourists and hunters. Amazingly, Reche lived another 25 years after his cancer diagnosis and died at the age of 69 in 1894. For much of its history Fallbrook has been known primarily for its olives and avocados. Throughout the first part of the 20th century olives were king in Fallbrook with the Loma Ranch of Dr. Charles Pratt producing over 15,000 gallons of olive oil between 1895 and 1919. In 1939, iconic movie director Frank Capra, who produced such masterpieces as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life, purchased Red Mountain Ranch and sold olive oil through the mail until he sold part of the ranch to the Fallbrook Utility District in 1949. Avocados supplanted olives as the area’s major crop after World War II and have dominated ever since, so much so that today Fallbrook is known as the “Avocado Capital of the World.”

A Fallbrook tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from your books to enjoy Fallbrook and the metropolitan areas to the north and south. Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens in Fallbrook offers live oak shaded displays of a variety of plants, trees and blooming flowers. The gardens are home to the historic Fallbrook Landmark Barn built in 1895. The barn is still painted the same red color that was utilized by early settlers and derived from a mixture of linseed oil and the rust from old farm equipment. The gardens also feature a wild bird sanctuary and butterfly garden.

Art enthusiasts will want to visit Fallbrook’s several top end art galleries. California Watercolor features famous American and “California Style” art by award winning artists including Millard Sheets, Emil Kosa Jr. and Doug Kingman. Sheets and Kosa are most famous for their depictions of California landscapes such as rolling hills, barns, roads and bridges. Kosa’s work is heavily influenced by the style and colors of Van Gogh. The gallery’s collection holds nearly 2,000 watercolors.

For something a bit more exciting it’s less than an hour’s drive from Fallbrook to the place “Where the Turf meets the Surf” at Del Mar race track along the coast a few miles north of San Diego. For 80 years, Del Mar has hosted the finest in quality thoroughbred racing with some of the best equine athletes competing on the track’s one mile oval. In its heyday, the track was frequented by Hollywood luminaries like Bing Crosby, who was a partner in the track’s ownership for many years, Gary Cooper and Jimmy Durante.
