About Fairfax

Modern day Fairfax is a very active community. Throughout the year residents enjoy more than a dozen events and festivals. The Derby Que, The Mother-Son Campout, and a night time egg hunt name just a few. Two of the longest running events are the Chocolate Lovers Festival and the Fall Festival. The Chocolate Lovers Festival started in 1993. Sponsored by the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Fairfax Coalition, the Downtown Fairfax Merchants Association, and George Mason University, The Chocolate Lovers Festival is a popular event that attracts visitors from all over the country every year. The event theme is always "love of chocolate." Featured events include: Taste of Chocolate, the Chocolate Challenge, Kiwanis Chocolate Chip Pancake Breakfast, and open houses at historic buildings. The Fall Festival in Fairfax has an even longer history going back to 1976. It began as a small craft market but has grown over the years to include 400 vendors with arts, crafts, food, civic information, children's activities, and 3 stages for live entertainment. For those seeking outdoor solitude or sports the City of Fairfax offers 220 acres of park land, with 25 parks and 28 miles of trails. Hike and study with your Fairfax tutor on the walking trail at Ashley Pond Conservatory site or use one of the rustic picnic shelters at Daniel's Run Park. Fairfax is also home to George Mason University. The largest academic institution in Virginia, George Mason offers plenty of clean quiet options from libraries to cafes for registered students and community members to meet, study, and socialize.

Fairfax goes by many different names locally including: Central Fairfax, Downtown Fairfax, Fairfax City, Oldtown Fairfax, Historic Fairfax, or the City of Fairfax. Its famous neighbor, Washington DC is just 17 miles east and easy to reach by public transportation. In 1987, the City of Fairfax Historic District was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Within the city there are 8 historic sites that reflect the area's rich history. Two particularly famous sites are the Fairfax County courthouse, and the Blenheim Estate. The Battle of Fairfax Courthouse was one of the first land battles of the American Civil War. A group of Union scouts fought with local militia here on June 1, 1861. The courthouse was also used as
by Union troops as a headquarters and lookout station. Blenheim House is not far from the courthouse. Also occupied by Union Soldiers during the Courthouse battle its historic significance comes from the more than 120 signatures, drawings, games and thoughts that the soldiers wrote on the walls. These diaries give a rare insight into typical soldier and civilian life during the Civil War. There is so much to see here in the City of Fairfax. Visit a historic site with your tutor to bring your studies to life or use them as a quiet place to work.
