Located only about 20 miles from the nation’s capital, Clinton, Maryland is best known for its role in the infamous assassination of Abraham Lincoln at the end of the Civil War. For many years, the area which is now Clinton was a simple crossroads just south of Washington D.C. It was named Surrattsville in 1854 when John Surratt established a tavern and boarding house on the site. Even though Maryland remained in the Union when the Civil War broke out, Surratt, his wife Mary and son John Jr. tended to be Confederate sympathizers, often catering to Confederate spies at their tavern and hotel. Surratt died in 1862 but Mary and John Jr. were ultimately implicated with John Wilkes Booth in a conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. Although Mary vehemently professed her innocence, she was found guilty by a military tribunal and eventually hanged despite pleas for clemency to Lincoln’s successor Andrew Johnson. She was the first woman executed by the United States government. Ironically, charges against John Jr. were dropped and he lived until 1916. Mary Surratt’s boarding house still stands as a museum and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Because of the notoriety and supposed treason of Surratt, the area’s name was changed to Robeysville, after the postmaster at the time. In 1879 the town was renamed again to Clinton but the high school retained the name Surrattsville which it has kept ever since. Clinton experienced increased growth in the second half of the twentieth century mostly because of Andrews Air Force Base which is located on Clinton’s northern border.
A Clinton tutor will keep you caught up on your studies so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy Clinton and the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area. If you’re interested in the history of Lincoln’s assassination the Surratt House Museum is a prime destination. The museum, originally built as a farm house in 1852, was converted to a boarding house two years later. After the assassination of Lincoln, Booth stopped at Surratt House to pick up weapons and supplies as he attempted to avoid federal authorities. The museum offers educational programs with titles such as “Clothing of the Civil War Era” and “Mary Surratt; Guilty or Innocent.” The museum also features a 12-hour bus tour of Booth’s escape route across Maryland and Virginia.
For more history of the Civil War era it is only a short drive to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Less than two years after the assassination of Lincoln Congress began appropriating money to build a memorial to the 16th president but actual construction didn’t begin for nearly fifty years. It took eight years for the monument to be finished but by 1922 the Lincoln Memorial as well as the entire National Mall including the Reflecting Pool were finished. Nearly eight million visitors come to the monument each year.
For those interested in the culinary delights, the DC Metro Food Tours explore several diverse neighborhoods in the Clinton area and beyond. Specially chosen meals are offered at a variety of local restaurants. The cuisine encompasses a wide variety of heritages and histories. For example, the Old Town Alexandria Food Tour features regional seafood, fish and chips from celebrated chef Anthony Bourdain and Old Town’s own indigenous desserts.
