About equal distances from Fresno to the north and Los Angeles to the south, Bakersfield, California is often considered the center of agricultural and oil production in the state’s Central Valley. Miners and settlers began coming to the Central Valley in the years following the discovery of gold near Sacramento in 1848. Lucky miners found gold at the bottom of the Kern River which runs through Bakersfield. Soon enough, farmers discovered that California’s rich Central Valley soil was just as valuable as the gold in the rivers and hills. Among those farmers was the industrious Thomas Baker from Ohio who moved to California in the 1850’s. Baker originally arrived in the Bay Area but soon moved to the Central Valley and was one of the founders of Visalia. Not long afterward, he realized the potential of a piece of land near the Kern River and laid plans for a town which he ultimately named Bakersfield after a field of alfalfa he would use to feed the horses of travelers through his farm. At the time of Baker’s death at the age of 63 in 1872, the town of Bakersfield had a thriving population of more than 500. This population would explode at the turn of the 20th century with the discovery of the Kern River Oil Field. Not long after this discovery, Standard Oil completed a pipeline sending Kern oil north to Port Richmond near San Francisco Bay where it could be refined and distributed throughout the United States and the world. Within a century, the oil field had produced two billion barrels of oil and geologists estimate the field still has nearly 400 million barrels, making it the second largest in California. In the thirty-year period between 1980 and 2010 Bakersfield more than tripled its population. Today, it is a bustling city with enduring roots in agriculture and big oil.
It’s certain that a Bakersfield tutor will get you caught up on your most difficult academic subjects so you can take time to enjoy Bakersfield and the surrounding areas. For more about the history of Bakersfield, the Kern County Museum is home to the 16-acre Pioneer Village which has over 50 historic buildings from the 1800’s. The site contains buildings from all over the county including a one room schoolhouse, church, train station as well as equipment from the early days of the oil industry. The most recognizable structure is the Beale Memorial Clock Tower, originally built in 1904 in downtown Bakersfield. The museum also houses permanent and rotating exhibits. The Black Gold display describes the oil industry in the area and the Lori Brock Children’s Discovery Center gives youngsters an opportunity for a hands-on experience.
With the goal of collecting and displaying the works of prominent California and American artists, the Bakersfield Museum of Art features painting, sculpture and photography. Founded as the Cunningham Memorial Art Gallery in 1956, the museum contains permanent collections as well periodic exhibitions in two main galleries and two smaller galleries. The museum hosts a variety of events such as “Art After Dark,” “Yoga at the Museum” and “Via Arté,” highlighted by Italian street painting.
The community of Bakersfield puts on several special events throughout the year. The Kern County Fair takes place at the end of September. The fair includes livestock shows, live entertainment and a carnival. The Bakersfield Jazz Festival in April brings top flight music to town. Likewise, the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra performs popular and classical pieces throughout the year.
