About Auburn

Auburn is a suburb of the Seattle area in Washington State. The area was originally known as "Slaughter" after one Lt. William Slaughter who died in 1855 in a battle with Native Americans. Local legend suggests that, in 1893, a large group of settlers from Auburn, New York, moved to Slaughter, and renamed the town to Auburn. Although older residents of the town considered the name Slaughter to be a memorial to a slain man, records suggest that newer residents felt uncomfortable with it and wanted to change it to something more pleasant.

The valley was originally the home of the Skopamish, Smalhkamish, and Stkamish Indian tribes. Today the Muckleshoot Reservation is located at the southern edge of the community. There are 2 historic pioneer sites of note in the City of Auburn. One, the Neely Mansion, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The other, Mary Olson Farm, is still in the nomination process. Neely Mansion, built by the son of a pioneer in 1891, is a unique landmark in the area because over the life of the mansion its different owners and the improvements they made reflect the different cultures represented in the Auburn Area. Owners and renters throughout the mansion's history include those of Swiss, Swedish, Japanese and Filipino heritage. One improvement not commonly found in other pioneer mansions is a Japanese style bath house or furoba built by Shigeichi and Shimano Hori who leased the Neely property from the late 1920s to late 1930s. Auburn's other historic site, Mary Olson Farm, began as logging mill. But after it was purchased by Swedish immigrants it became a steady source of timber, hops, dairy cattle, veal, poultry, apples, and potatoes. Today visitors can explore a turn of the century barn, and 1902 farmhouse as well as various outbuildings including a weaving shed and a smokehouse. The farm also has a museum and research library attached to it. There is so much to see in Auburn. Your Auburn tutor can help you get ahead of the curve so you can get back to all that the city has to offer.

Although Auburn began as a farm community it grew substantially with the arrival of the railroad. The Northern Pacific and Puget Sound Shore Railroad and the Seattle-Tacoma Interurban line began service that included Auburn in 1882 and 1902 respectively. Today the rail bed that remains from the Interurban line is popular biking trail. Recreational bikers and even some regular commuters to work enjoy the link between Auburn and the nearby cities of Tukwila, Kent, Algona, and Pacific. Auburn is a modern city but its downtown still maintains a "Main Street U.S.A." appearance particularly with its 1920s "craftsman-style" homes. There are many clean, quiet, student friendly places where you can meet your Auburn tutor. The Auburn campus of the Greenriver Community College offers a variety of formal and informal study spaces including a roof deck outdoor patio at Salish Hall. Coffee shops and meeting rooms in both the student union and the technology centers are convenient and open to the public.
