About Ashburn

Described as a busy and prosperous place by a traveler in 1918, Ashburn, Virginia is a suburb of Washington D.C. about 30 miles from the nation’s capital. Real estate website Movoto ranks Ashburn in the top five places to raise a family In the D.C. metropolitan area. With a median household income exceeding $120,000 a year, Ashburn is mainly residential with winding streets and peaceful cul-de-sacs. First settled in the early 18th century, the area was originally known as Farmwell because of its successful tobacco plantations. A legend concerning a lightning strike on a local ash tree prompted the name change in the late 1800’s. From 1880 to 1920 Ashburn grew into a large commercial city and a summer resort for Washingtonians. While no Civil War battles were fought in Ashburn, the area around the city is ripe with Civil War history. The Battle of Ball’s Bluff took place only a few miles from Ashburn in Leesville and was one of the first defeats of the Union army in the war. The site of the battle is now a regional park with guided tours of the field and cemetery.

Considered a quiet suburb, Ashburn benefits from its proximity to the larger Washington D.C. milieu. It’s guaranteed that a Grade Potential Tutor can get you on the right track academically so you can enjoy all the exciting activities and attractions in the metro area. Just to the north in Leesburg visitors can take a tour of Marshall House, the home of American statesman General George C. Marshall who served as military Chief of Staff during World War II as well as Secretary of State under President Harry S. Truman. Marshall oversaw the rebuilding of Europe from the devastation of the war. He was so important that Truman labeled him the “Go-To” guy. Leesville is also home to the unique Museum of Hounds and Hunting in North America which opened in 1985 to preserve the artifacts and memorabilia of the sporting life revolving around the centuries old-custom of hunting with horses and hounds.

Perfect for a day outdoors, Ashburn Park offers hiking trails along a creek, playground, picnic grounds and a pavilion. Likewise, Bles Park is a 124-acres with nature trails, wetlands, a wooded area as well opportunities to fish for largemouth bass on Broad Run River. For more family fun, there are a wealth of places to visit in Ashburn and its surroundings. For the adventurous, IFLY Loudoun offers indoor skydiving. Harper’s Ferry Adventure Center in Purcellville features white water rafting on the Potomac and zip line adventures. For the kids, Chibis Indoor Playground has bounce houses, slides, hands-on toys and ride-on cars. The Family Jungle Gym allows parents and kids alike to enjoy the fun.

Further afield, it’s a short drive into Washington D.C. and a trip to the Smithsonian Institution. An Ashburn tutor can tell you that it’s the largest and arguably most famous museum in the world. Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian is home to several collections including the American Art Museum, American History Museum, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Portrait Gallery and the Air and Space Museum
