About Arlington

You may have heard of suburbs, but have you also heard of boomburbs? Suburbs grow out of larger cities, with residential areas popping up, along with the necessary amenities of everyday life. Suburbs were and are a phenomenon that occurred with city expansion and the crowded life that comes with it. But boomburbs happen to suburban towns that see rapid expansion—unprecedented, really—in the endeavor to leave the city. Boomburbs are a phenomenon mostly associated with North America, and are formed when industries enter a suburb, employ thousands, and continue to grow. The suburb “booms” as a result of increased economic activity and population growth that accompanies it. Arlington, Texas is one of these cities: a boomburb that saw rapid expansion after World War II with increased manufacturing and lucrative business of the automobile industry.

Though Arlington had been a community since the nineteenth century, its identity as a boomburb did not solidify until General Motors arrived in the 1950s with an assembly plant. This, in addition to aerospace developments, supplied thousands of jobs to the citizens of Arlington, and for forty or so years, populations steadily expanded—booming decade by decade. The result? Arlington is now home to a Six Flags, Hurricane Harbor, museums, theaters, the AT&T arena, a planetarium, and a variety of other forms of cultural entertainment for its residents and visitors alike. It rivals other cities as one of the fastest-growing in the state, and competes with nearby Dallas as a tourist magnet.

Arlington is not without its tribulations, however. The city sits in the path of Hurricane Alley, a common route for hurricanes to occur across the Midwestern United States. These storms have occasionally touched down on the city and caused damage, including throwing a semi truck a few years ago with the force of the winds. Throughout it all, Arlington has persisted in growth and a special Texas brand of success. It continues to boom, more recently in the healthcare industry, which employs just as many residents now as General Motors did through the 1950s to 1990s. A spirit of optimism and a strong work ethic drives this city to new horizons.

Arlington’s boom is a good example to students and tutors alike that rewards do not come without persistent effort to push our limits. Not content to stay small, Arlington’s growth is a sign of ambition and ingenuity. Struggling students should note this—ambition will carry you far, and especially help sustain you through setbacks. Tutors in Arlington work to instill this principle in the students they work with. They are also examples of Arlington’s high drive to succeed, so clients who seek their services can be rest assured they will get a Texas-sized return on their efforts.
