Known for its love of sports and high quality athletic programs, Texas is a state that funnels player after player into the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, and of course, the National Football Association. Allen, a fast-growing town outside of Dallas, is no exception to this tradition. This city has produced several professional athletes, including Steven Terrell, who graduated from Allen High School.
Terrell played high school football and demonstrated a natural talent and athleticism on the field early on. As a senior, he participated in the school’s Division I State Championship and helped bring the Eagles to victory. While at Allen High School, he had 122 tackles, blocked five kicks, and completed two interceptions. His excellent performance on the field earned him an award as first-team, All-State by the TSWA; even the Associated Press noted his accomplishments with their own All-State award. Terrell was poised for professional ball, but first, would play at the college level.
For his four years at Texas A&M, he played as a starter for the school’s team 24 out of 52 total games, with 139 tackles, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles. He was recognized as first-team Academic All-Big 12 at the Southeastern Conference, and also served as team captain his senior year. The leadership skills he gained while playing college ball set him up for a professional career in football, which he has thus far experienced with significant note.
As a free agent, Terrell has played with several different teams: Jacksonville Jaguars, the Houston Texans, and most recently, the Seattle Seahawks. He went from their practice roster to active roster in 2014 and was even able to play in the Super Bowl that same year. Fans of football will remember that this was when the Seahawks actually lost to the New England Patriots, and ever since, Terrell has had a difficult time playing to the maximum capacity he demonstrated throughout high school and college, but still he continues for his love of the game and to live up to a Texas reputation, so deeply engrained in the state’s love of all things athletic.
Like Steven Terrell, advancing through scaling levels of difficulty, in whatever subject, can present challenges to the average student. What makes sense and what a student is good at one year can be the most difficult subject the next. Grade Potential tutors in Allen are there to remind their clients, that, like Terrell, they are capable of working harder and trying more to maintain their academic performance—it just might take more than they are used to giving. Terrell’s performance is an example to tutors and students like to not give up and to persist through whatever challenges may face us.
